I didn't fish the Pass this weekend. Rocky Ford was great. Last Wens. and
Thur. the fish were around for the outgoing tide and gone for incoming. I
looked for them with the fish finder and found some away from the shore in
about 15 - 20 feet of water. I think the pens and nets belong to the
Suquamish tribe. Last week, their enforcement boat swung by when I was
fishing up by Miller Bay. They asked if I had my license with me and if I
knew the salmon season was closed. They have a tribal center south of the
Pass bridge. Last year they had several nets out from the beach in front of
the center.

I second that!!! Saturday, I fished under Agate and hooked and released
three very nice coho. There were fish rolling and jumping all the way
through the outgoing tide. I also fished this morning (Sunday). I
hooked and landed two, right at daybreak, and there were very few fish
showing (pure luck). At about 8:30 am, the tide turned around and
started heading out. I hung around expecting a repeat of the day
before; jumping fish and some hook-ups on the outgoing tide. However,
there were none. I cannot say I saw a fish jump on the outgoing for the
two hours I waited, casted, and stripped flies. Why no fish? I can
only think of the 4 net boats I saw headed out Saturday mid-morning.
They were headed from the south to the north (from the poulsbo side to
the open water, toward Seattle). I can only think the same happened
this week-end as what was reported by Mike Santagelo (sp? I apologize)
last week-end. Good fishing Saturday, crummy on Sunday; the nets got
em' fellas. Can't come under the bridge when your head is stuck in mesh
two miles up the Sound.
Anyway, I can't complain. At least I landed a few. I was using a very
sparse chartruese/white Clouser. Tried the popper in the same color
combo, but no luck. If anybody knows, could you please answer these
questions:
1) Who owns/pays for the fish pens on the south side of the bridge?
2) Who is and is not allowed to net the area?
3) I see a pattern of netting on Sundays. Does anyone know of specific
netting dates that these boats are restricted to?
4) How come two, three, and four years ago, the fishing was so dynamite
under the bridge and I never saw any net boats, but now I do? Was this
a fishery no commercials/native Americans knew about until recently?
5) I see people fishing the "other" side of the bridge (Bainbridge
side), and have heard of "Manzita (sp?)" fish that are supposedly bigger
and meaner. True or false?
Thanks and good luck.
