After years of trying different things, I stumbled upon the method of
soaking hide or tail in TSP (the cleaning agent) before anything else.
Mixed at about 1 tbs./gallon, it really cleans the hide, works
especially good on the white of the tails, and as it is strongly basic,
starts to dry out the hide. After 12 to 24 hours the hide is ready to
take out, rinse and dry.
Then it is pretty easy to finish off with borax or other more
traditional methods.
