I caught my first steelhead today. It has been three months in the
making but well worth. I was fishing my usual hole on the
Stilly(legally) and hooked into a nice 7 pound hatchery buck. I caught
him on a black lead eye egg sucking leech. He hammered the fly and was
hooked well before I could even react. While not the largest in the hole
he certainly put on a good fight and made a couple nice leaps. Landed
him after about a 10 minute fight and I kept him. I figured for the time
and money I have spent trying to catch a steelhead in the past 3 months
that the fish was worth its weight in gold. I hope the next one does not
take this long...
I also hooked 5 chum and landed 3. The largest was between 12-15 pounds
and he bit me. Only one of them really put up a fight and the other two
just kinda rolled over and came into shore. There are tons of chum on
the stilly now which is surprising due to the lack of any real good rain
lately.
Anyway I will be back out there tomorrow to get that second steelhead.
Or at least try...
