Good report! Enjoyable to read.  The expectations part is also a thought provoking aspect of flyfishing.  You are starting to see, and will probably see more and more, as fishing pressure increases, suggestions that we tone down our expectations and plan on less fish days.  The drive for a 25-50 fish day, or whatever high expectation you have as the bench mark for a good time, should be reduced.  Fishing is a state of mind anyway, and much better for the resource.  Hard to do at times, when you've experienced the thin, but just looking around a little bit, can make it just as enjoyable and reduce the numbers game.  Jere

Having fished this lake a dozen times since the opener (helps to work 10 minutes from the lake) the fish finally humbled me when it counted most. Friday fishing was fantastic from shore. I arrived at the lake about 3 and till the sun dropped behind the hills on the other side of the Columbia, I could not keep the fish off. They were fairly selective on size and color but a size 16 brassie proved an appropriate match to the thousands of empty copper colored shucks on the water.

On Saturday I took a newbie flyfisher and after talking up how great the fishing had been for me for 3 weeks we were ready with video camera to capture on film his first fish flycasting.

When I tied on the diminutive brassie to the end of his tippet... well you can guess the look on his face. "You expect me to hook a fish on that?" After flailing the water for 35 minutes we decided to take a break. He eventually did catch a fish while I went home from a lake where I have not smelled skunk for two years. While he was happy upon catching a fish I don't think he'll ever believe how good fishing had been. "You caught how many fish yesterday?"

The worst part was on Friday he and his girlfriend were 1/4 mile up the lake from where I'd been.

There were lots of people on the lake; the most I have ever seen. I am sure that later on fishing picked up if the wind allowed a decent cast. Funny how peoples expectations are different. On the way out a fellow on his way ask how fishing was. My partner enthusiastically responded "Yeah, fishing was great?" I did not have the heart to say that it was the poorest that I had seen on the lake.
