I have had a lot of fun fishing for kelp bass (and catching) with an
intermediate sink around the edges of kelp beds and rocks, stripping a red
& white basic streamer.

Subject: Anyone have info on FFing San Juan Is (salt or fresh)?

Late June/early July the family and I'll be near Friday Harbor on San
Juan Island. I've tried ff'ing the channels
there before without any luck ... but I was trying to sink the leader on

a floating line, unsuccessfully. I've since bought a sinking line.

I've found that I can cast from the shore, which provides good access to

the rocks, but from there it's hard to reach the interesting foam lines
and seams that form during tides; or I may be able to commandeer a
dinghy (or bring my canoe), and anchor in the middle of the channels
(and hope it don't come loose!).

All the info and books I've been able to find (eg Lefty's saltwater
book) deal with sight-casting to permit, bonies, etc. down South. I have
no
idea what flies or tactics to use. I'll be using my Sage DS 8-wt
steelhead
rod with a Ross Cimarron reel. Any suggestions? Any comments on ocean
flyfishing on the more northerly coasts generally? (Seems to be a
largely
overlooked opportunity everywhere except this n..g.!)

I'm also interested in any freshwater fishing there is on SJI, though I
know it's probably limited to that stocked campground lake (better than
nothing?)

Thanks.
