A memorable day, yesterday. Received some great info from the flyshop in
Idaho Falls and knew the progression of "trout flies up the river. We put
in- in the lower canyon with an armada of boats making the canyon trip above
and down to our put-in. At the put in, a fellow told us that an angler
caught 35, or so, in an evenings fishing near the ramp. We anchored up on
riffles, and got out on islands that had back channels. There were
salmonflies everywhere, eyes, nose, (kept my mouth shut) Used a #4 black
foam pattern with an orange underbody and it worked very well. We used 2x
tippets and broke off several fish. Hot day, little wind and there were but
1/2 boats in our section. We caught big browns and cutthroat. Typical
cutts, if there was a tree in the water, there was one near it. Oh, saw a
guy in a driftboat floating down a fast water bank, pitching into pockets in
the bank.....hooked a limb and the rod straigtens out as the boat goes below
the hangup. I watched him as he yelled, "Oh no!" I thought it must have
been his last fly, but when he hung up and the rod loaded, out shot his rod
tip....tippet broke and in the water went his rod tip. He said that was the
second one that has happened that way. (somethin else to remember) Jere
