South Sound Fly Fishers July Club Meeting
How many of you have fly fished for pure strain muskellunge (Esox
masquinongy) or hybrid tiger musky (E. lucius and E. masquinongy)? As
many of you know, the tiger muskie is a hybrid of a male northern pike and
female muskie. It is usually infertile and has characteristics of both
parents. The largest tiger's in Mayfield Lake (Cowlitz County) are now
over 30 pounds, and these fish were planted as fingerlings in 1988. A
fish this big and strong, with their fearsome teeth, does not come easily
or quickly to the boat. Sturdy outfits are needed, and a short length of
wire leader enhances the chances of landing one. Although success rates
are low (Muskellunge pundits say that it takes about 10,000 casts to
actually land one of these colossal freshwater predators), several "heart
stopping follows" may be experienced daily. Needles to say, when you
finally hook into one of these large adults with a flyrod, it will put a
strain on your tackle and nerves!
The July 17th program will be presented by Steve Jackson (WDFW's Warmwater
Fish Enhancement Program). Steve will inform us of the States tiger
muskie program, including topics of muskellunge biology and proven fishing
techniques for catching this exotic predator in Washington State.
