As a 30 year REI member, the patronage refund at year end is
certainly a strong selling point, especially considering that REI's
day to day pricing is not particularly aggressive.
One note though: REI purchases made by credit card do not qualify for
the full refund amount, currently at 10% or so, but rather some
smaller amount. This is especially important to understand when
buying merchandise from their web site.
The way around this is to apply for an REI Visa card. Purchases on
the REI card not only qualify for the full refund amount, but also
earn a 1% year end rebate on non-REI purchases as well. If you pay
off your balance every month, their currently hefty APR of 21.74% on
unpaid balances is immaterial.
