Hey Andy,

We saw several cases of individual salmon hitting bait near the surface, but 
not a school of salmon feeding on a bait ball (if that's what you're 
asking).

The salmon seemed to be holding down 10-20', but the water was clear and 
there wasn't a lot of surface disturbance so the wake of the popper was 
clearly visible to them.

I also had luck with a fast (and slow) trolled bucktail and a slow-trolled 
small candlefish pattern.  It's just that the surface action with the popper 
is addictive.  Hearing Leland yell and howl as salmon after salmon chased 
and struck the popper was too much fun for me to ignore!
