Fished the Yak today in two places today. Spent the morning from 7:30 -
11:00 or so in the canyon just above the bridge at Umptanum (sp?). Worked
the stretch on the road side in the faster/rocky water and did very well.
Started out with a #10 Yellow Stimulator and a #14 BHPT dropper and hooked
about a dozen fish. I had most of the nymph in this stretch and had many
fish come up to the Stimulator and turn at the last second before taking. A
small flurry of caddis started around 10:00 so I tied on a #16 Olive EHC and
re-worked some of the water where I'd had refusals and managed to hook up
about 6 more fish on the 2nd run through part of the water. I ended up
landing about 1/2 of what I hooked, fish ranged from 4" to 14" in this
stretch with quite a few in the 9-11" range. LDR's were almost welcome
since the water isn't all that cold and the fish could use a break, I used
4X tippets and pretty much tried to horse the fish in.

Moved up to Rinehart to try and get out of the wind and fished it from noon
to 1:30. I worked cut banks in the park with the Stim/PT combo and did very
well. Landed a dozen fish, one went 17" and one went 14", the rest were
10-11" fish. I got about 1/2 of the dry and 1/2 on the nymph though the
bigger ones took the nymph.

The water in the park was much, much lower than 3 weeks ago when I was last
there and easily wadable. The canyon was a bit higher and faster and harder
to wade in but then again, it always is that way. The wind was a total pain
starting at about 10 a.m. which is why I abandoned the canyon to try and
find a bit of shelter in the trees. The river is definately turning into
fall mode though, the fish in Rinehart where back to the 'normal' fall
holding spots that I found last year and many of the 'summer' runs I'd been
fishing are now knee deep or less and aren't holding fish.
