Bag limit raised to 3 hatchery steelhead
per day in southeast Washington

Action: Emergency rule change to 3 hatchery (adipose and/or ventral fin
clipped) steelhead allowed per day.

Effective date: September 9, 2001, 12:01 a.m. through to normal season
termination dates for hatchery steelhead waters in southeast Washington
(check 2001-2002 WDFW fishing regulation pamphlet).

Species affected: Hatchery steelhead

Location: Those portions of the Walla Walla River Basin and Snake River
Basin, including the Grande Ronde and Tucannon Rivers that are open to
harvest of hatchery steelhead.

Reason for action: A very large return of hatchery steelhead has been
predicted for the Columbia and Snake River basins. Over 400,000 steelhead
have already passed over Bonneville Dam. This is the largest steelhead
count on record. Only a relatively small number of returning hatchery
steelhead are needed for hatchery production each year. Therefore, the
excess hatchery steelhead are available for harvest.

Gear restrictions and closed areas: See Fishing Rules pamphlet for
applicable gear restrictions within southeast Washington waters open to
steelhead fishing. Closed areas identified in Fishing Rules pamphlet are
still in effect.

Other information: Oregon has already enacted a rule change to allow
retention of three hatchery steelhead per day in the Snake and Grande Ronde
rivers. Idaho Fish and Game is expected to follow suit this week. The
change for Washington regulations ensures that fishers have consistent daily
limits in boundary waters of the Snake and Grande Ronde rivers, as well as
in nearby waters of southeast Washington.

Information contact: For more information, contact John Whalen, Regional
Fish Program Manager, WDFW Spokane Regional Office at (509) 456-4082.

Fishers must have a current Washington fishing license. Check the WDFW
2001-2002 "Fishing in Washington" rules pamphlet or the Fishing section of
the WDFW webpage at http:www.wa.gov/wdfw for details on fishing seasons and
regulations. Fishing regulations are subject to change. Check the WDFW
Fishing hotline for the latest rule information at (360) 902-2500, press 2
for recreational rules. For the Shellfish Rule Change hotline call (360)
796-3215. Be aware that Catch Record Card River codes changed April 2000.
New Area codes are found on pages 11 & 19 of the "Fishing in
Washington" pamphlet.
