My friends bday was on Saturday and he requested I take him out in the salt for a shot at some coho. He had never caught anything is the salt and with the run tapering off I really didn't have high hopes.
So I decided point no point would be our best shot and we arrived in the cover of darkness around 6:30am to fish the incoming tide. There were hundreds of dead herring all over the beach and I took this as a sign that at least some bait was around. Immediately spotted big fish breaking the surface at around 200 yards and we were hoping they would come in with the tide. On his first cast my partner picked up a 15 incher and I did the same a few minutes later. No less than 2 casts later I got into a spunky 4 pounder. Then I hear someone yell and look over to see nice 7lb coho break the surface. I look at my partners rod and notice the telltale thumping of the rod and the stupid grin on his face. 5-10 minutes later he had the fish licked and we released it. After the tide turn the fishing died down and we ended up leaving around 10am. I will take a 4 fish day in late October anytime. The key was big flies to imitate the herring. There were a few other fly guys there using shrimp and candlefish immitations and they were not catching a thing. -sean Get 250 color business cards for FREE! http://businesscards.lycos.com/vp/fastpath/
