Any > pointers for starting out would be helpful and appreciated. > > Ray > for fishing sink-tips, i'll fish a short leader consisting of a foot or two of 40 lb butt section. looped to that is 2-3 ft of tippet (usually 8-15 lb maxima). for fishing a floating line, i will go with the same length leader i would fish with a single handed rod. i've read and heard that one needs a leader at least the length of the rod... but have found that 9-12 ft. leaders work just fine with the spey rod, and i personally find them easier to fish with. i usually build my own leaders... with 50% of the length being the butt section (40 lb maxima, although the limper materials work well too) and then tapering it down. chris
