I strap my pontoon boat to the factory rack on my Pathfinder with bungee cords....one 
on each corner and one on the nose. Distance doesn't seem to matter once you have it 
secured if it will hold up at 70MPH for a mile it will hold for 200 more. Wind doesn't 
seem to cause too many problems either as long as the straps remain tight. The only 
issue I have found is change in elevation causing the pontoons to increase/decrease 
air pressure. You need to keep this in mind when you go over/into the mountains. If 
you start at see level with a tightly inflated pontoon you risk one bursting if you go 
up too high without easing some air out. The reverse happens when you come back down, 
causing a need to tighten the straps to the car so the boat doesn't shift around in 
the wind.
