I also was lucky enough to have Dec run across me (floundering) in my first year with the big stick, and give me pointers 6 or more years ago.
After I shared his stuff with my partner, we decided to reduce the learning curve, and simply book him for a day . . . worth every penny. Far more valuable than any collection of books, videos etc. This guy is a master teacher (coming from a newly retired educator of 30 years.) If you can hook up with him, that is the way to go.
Another valuable activity is the Spey casting gathering that takes place each spring, on the west side (last year it was at Howard Miller), and Fall on the East side (near Lewiston as I recall). A bunch of guys, all helpfull, with a bunch of rods and lines to play with.
