Just for the record. I have been told from people I trust in these matters very much (Jeff Serena and others) that there is no statistical evidence of an increase in new people to fly fishing around the time of said movie. There is statistical evidence that points to the possibility that some people who were non-fly fishing fishers switched to or incorporated more fly fishing into their regime during that time.
This would fly in face of the idea that more affluent non-sportsmen flocked to the past time; more likely was an increase in fly fishing Bubba types. *G* What I suspect is more accurate and industry stats bear out more is that marketing wizzes took a hold of the idea of turning the affluent 80's folks towards more upscale gear et al. for their pursuit. What this might mean is that instead of bringing yuppies (I'm not really sure what the term even means anymore) to the sport, the sport finally started to cater to all the yuppies and yuppie wannabes who were already among us. I have seen the enemy and they is us!!! -Pogo- Have fun Paul
