Paul,

I have to agree with you about being able to use the rod tubes with the reel and line still on the rod. But I have a 3pc Sage RPLXi 8 wt that I still do that with. I just have 3 pieces instead of 2. I would actually prefer a 4 piece over a 3 piece as it can be used in a standard 2 piece tube by just taking it apart in the middle with the reel left on it or in the shorter 4 piece tube when it has to be packed. When I purchased my 3 piece I tried out both the 3 piece and the 2 piece. I chose the 3 due to what I felt was a better casting rod. The flex seemed smoother throughout the rod and didn't have the characteristic stiffness in the ferule I've noticed on many 2 piece rods.

Roger,

I have to go with the two piece rods.  When I get to the water I get too excited to monkey around with fitting together multiple piece rods.  I have a hard enough time threading the line on the rod.  I use the rod cases that allow me to keep the reel on the rod when I break it down!
