Just about ready to pack up and head home from visiting the family this weekend but wanted to pass on a quick report.
Over the last 2 days I have fished Blue Lake, Fish Lake, Aeneas and another small pond that shall remain nameless. Overall, the fishing is terribly slow. The damsels nymph's were swimming like mad at Aeneas but the few fish I found were hugging the shoreline or sitting on the bottom. The one fish I did land was very sluggish and a fellow fisherman reported a water temp of 60 degrees one foot under the surface. Blue Lake was also slow. Again, the few fish we were able to get into were hugging the shore. I was rowing the boat and playing tour guide for my sister who is down from Juneau so I can't really say I hit any of these lakes as hardcore as I would have in my float tube but everybody seemed to be having a hard time. In fact, on both Blue and Aeneas, we were the only ones I saw bring fish to hand. The only lake that produced somewhat decent was the small pond I mentioned. It had a prolific Mayfly hatch occuring and a few fish were keying on them. We caught a few little brookies and a nice rainbow or two. A weeks worth of warm weather will do wonders for improving the quality of fishing up this way. There have been many reports of low water in the newspapers and various fishing forums so here is an update from a local perspective. The Conconully Lakes are very low. Maybe the lowest I have ever seen them in May. The lower lake is starting to fill up a bit but will not even come close to reaching full pool this year. The upper lake is even worse. It only has one small feeder stream to fill it and it must be down a good 20 feet or more. Fish Lake is also low. Once you hit the Sinalahekin Valley the lakes are at full pool. Blue Lake, Forde, Connor etc. are all nice and full. For some reason, the Conconully area either hasn't had its runoff yet or was in a mini snow shadow. Time to go fishing. Mike
