I've been to Merrill for the famous Hex hatch but I thought it started by mid June and ended around Mid July.  I've never had an experience like that.  There were float tubes and pontoon boats everywhere.  I got there about a half an hour before dark and the hatch was just starting.  There are lots of big browns swimming around and gulping these flies as the begin to emerge.  Fish were taking them just feet from my pontoon and long casts weren't necessary.  I put in at the campground and which was full at the time.  Camp hosts were there and the place was pretty quite when I got off the lake around midnight or so.  This problem with knifings and shooting is something I've never heard before.
