Just thought I'd throw into this discussion a cheap alternative to a rod
holder, and free for those of you that already own the one item you need...

I keep a carabiner on my float tube attached to a d-ring next to my right
hand. Whenever I need to set my rod down while I'm out on the water I set
the reel-end in the mesh in the prow of my u-shaped tube, then clip the
shaft of the rod through the carabiner. This way if I do something stupid
and bump the rod, upset the tube, etc, the rod will not fall in the water.
I suppose under very extreme circumstances it could (i.e., flip my tube),
but the chances are almost nil.

I often clip the rod in when I'm getting ready to cover some distance and am
not interested in trolling on the way. That way I can kick as hard as I
want without fussing with the rod.

ps: I use carabiners for LOTS of stuff - attaching my fins to the tube
while hiking in, same biner is used to attach a 25' rope that sits in the
prow of my tube for tying up to reeds, anchoring with a bag of rocks, etc.
Just a darn handy item that has crossed over from climbing into my current
(mellower) pursuits, camping and fishing - good ones (not fancy) cost about
$5 last I checked.

Caddis makes one, about $20 at Outdoor Emporium, if memory serves.

Have ya'll noticed the O.E. has arranged a new fly fishing section?
