James, That's very, very sad.
I keep the phone number to report Poachers in my cell phone, and since I have I haven't had the chance to use it. FYI my cell phone works at Lone Lake. I guess that I knew that 1/4" was too small to be a damsel, but somehow my mental ruler wasn't working. Anyway, I visited Lone Lake yesterday and the mystery nymph was nowhere to be seen. Fishing was slow. Trollers were picking up a smattering of 12" stockers, perhaps some larger. I took a long nap in bottom of the boat and forgot to fish very hard. I fear that many people are ignoring the regulations at Lone Lake, as one guy told me that everyone left with a stringer of fish last weekend. He seemed intent on taking a stringer out himself yesterday. It would be nice to see some law enforcement. I wasn't able to persuade any takers with the few nymph patterns I brought, but figured I'd better tie up some more pretty soon. From literal imitations to the impressionistic, there seem to be nearly as many damsel nymph patterns as there are tiyers. This morning, I tried an interesting version called the Euro Damsel (http://www.westfly.com/patterns/wet/eurodamsel.shtml) using Jay Fair's yellow-olive maribou instead of the olive the pattern recommends. Looks pretty good to me, but the fish's opinion is the only one that counts. What damsel pattern works best for you? Kent Lufkin
