I've been fishing the big #2 popper head and #2 Gamakatsu Octopus hook. The fly is a good
3 1/2" long. I stopped by Lincoln this afternoon at 5pm on the way home. It was way too weedy and the tide had slacked at the beach.
On to Golden Gardens for the morning tide.
Leland.
Windy, though at least it was from the left. It was an afternoon of fighting my equipment: bird's nests in my line on every other cast, seaweed everywhere, operator irregularities (or in my case, they may be regularities) resulting in collapsing and/or tailing loops. Argh. Best moment was a snap-snap-snap follow to the rod tip. Fish came out of the water as it turned away, I quickly (amazingly without much trouble) flipped my fly out again and got some noisy splashing as a result, but hardly felt the fish at all. Worst moment was trying to remove about a pound of seaweed from my line (which had tumbled out of my stripping pan) to see a nice salmon porpoise right in front of me, right in casting distance.
I'll be there tomorrow night.
Leland, I've been using the smallest popper body. It what situations would you go bigger?
Tom
