Just returned from cycling trip in French Alps, rode 1200 miles and climbed 120.000 feet !
After noticing lot of CDC material in France,I started to make some new fly.
Finally got to fish the Rocky Ford for the first time.
Weather was warm, clear sky with no wind and small crowd.
My new dry with CDC material proved to be great choice.
First I tied scuds and landed 3 nice fat rainbows.
But I wanted to challenge myself with super fine tippet, so I tied # 20 CDC PDM color midge on a 7X tipped and 12" leader and landed 3 nice 20" fish, it took some time to get the fish back in shape,I made sure fish took free on it's own.
I was proud of myself since the heavy mossy beach side was big challenge to bring the fish to hand. It was always my dream to catch 20 " on size 20 and X 7 tippet.
I try some of me Euro style caddis and they worked well on the big trout.
For every one gulper going for surface I would cast about 10 times and than 1 out of 10 I would get a strike!
At about 5 PM and 11 fish landed, I tied small Olive wet fly # 8 and cast up stream and on the 3 rd cast my line stopped ! I set the hook and quick I was in to a another Bow! well this fish went for 3 long runs! after I got him closer I know this was a special fish for me!
My leader was taper to a 5 lb fluorocarbon tippet, I was worry if this leader will hold the fish safe
After 10 minutes I landed him and he measured 28" super fat rainbow, it was my biggest trout on the fly! I took several pictures, she was so strong when I got him on the grassy bank he broke my hook and slapped me with it's tail so hard!
It took me about 15 minutes to get her back in the shape, he took on her own.
My T&T LP 5 weight rod and Abel TR1 reel worked awesome on all those fish.
My flask of cherry vodka and cigar tasted great after a big catch of the day.
Day before I fished Lenore for 4 hrs before going to R F and ended up with 10 nice colored lahotans, water was very low in the lake, lot of caddis size14 on the water, lake is about to turn this time.
I would love to find out what this rainbow weight would be, 28" and very fat fish!
I have a great pictures of the fish to show.
Thanks for your time,
Les Korcala
