Sean, Great report! Thanks. My wife drags me to Reno every few years and is threatening to do it again this coming year. I last about 30 minutes in a casino until I'm bored to tears, so it would be great to be able to hit a river. I've thought about bringing a pack rod for years. About how many miles away is this area of the Truckee? Thanks, Cliff Sean Grier wrote: Well, just got back from Reno just ahead of the forecasted snow storms.  Given the state of my (still) broken wing from an earlier murdercycle accident, I decided to forego the Lahontan hog-contest and try some small water fishing and ended up hitting the Truckee. I stopped in on Thursday and spoke with the nice folks at the Reno Flyshop, and they were kind enough to give me a map for the local sections of the river.  I ended up going to Verdi and fished upstream from the Crystal Peak Park area (upstream of the I-80 bridge in an area called the "Trophy Water").  The folks behind the counter indicated that I should try nymphs down deep, but with the condition of the river (low, slow and clear), I couldn't seem to find any water like that. I hit a couple of whitefish in a promising section (nice start), but it was slow fishing all morning.  Weather was cold, but clear (about 38º air temp; water temp 43º) with a light wind from upstream that occasionally gusted to 15 knots. I was starting to get pretty disheartened about the whole thing, when I found what looked to be a deep pool at the base of a pair of big boulders about 1 mile upstream from the bridge.  I started working the hole from the back working the flies forward in the pool and got a good hookup right away!  Bent the ol' 3wt quite nicely.  After some acrobatics, and some hard pulling, (the fish that is, not me), I finally brought to hand a nice 13" bow - bright red stripe down his side, and white edging to his pec, ventral and anal fins.  Well, if there's one, there might be 2, so I worked the hole hard and picked up 2 more with one LDR.  Biggest was 16" and FAT!  For such low water, and cold conditions, these 'bows were in quite good shape. Well, I headed on upstream and caught just one more after working another 1/2 mile of river, and decided to go back to the honeyhole.  I must of rested the hole long enough, 'cause I was able to systematically work the spot and brought 4 more to hand and LDR'd 2 more.  My guess is that at least one of those was a fish I'd hooked earlier.  Who says 'bows are smart! All in all, a VERY nice day, on a BEAUTIFUL section of water. Thanks to all who steered me in the right direction.  If anyone on the board gets a chance to fish over there, stop by and patronize the Reno Flyshop.  Great folks, and good selection and open 7 days a week.  Non-res license was $11 for 2 days, and if the flyshop doesn't have any, Longs Drugs does. Blue skies and tight lines, Sean ----- Original Message ----- From: Sean Grier To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, November 13, 2003 7:16 PM Subject: Reno, NV bound - looking for FF ideas  I'm headed out to Reno for a couple of days on business.  Was thinking the Truckee or maybe Pyramid for some Lahontan leviathans. Wanted to know if anyone on the board would have insight into this time of year, and what to expect.  I figure I'll drop by the Reno Fly Shop to get the latest tips, flies, and a out-of-state license, but any help from board members would be appreciated.  I could take my 3wt 5pc Winston, or my 7wt 4pc Scott, or I could take both and try the 2 different fisheries... Any input would be appreciated. Sean
