I agree with your scud fishing description, but you didn't mention that it works best when it's calm and sunny. Wind makes it hard to see the area where the fly is and tends to blow the fly out of your view. Clouds reduce vision to the immediate shoreline.  Also, educated fish know that a scud never hits the surface and sinks to the bottom. It's best to position the fly when the fish is out of the area, many will be spooked at the site of a sinking scud.
