Last September I went to the Easton Ponds area West Nelson
siding road exit, attempting to catch a brown for my pond. While chironomid
fishing I hooked into and landed a 30" Northern Pike Minnow. I didn't even know
what the hell it was, but for a while I though it was a real trophy. I guessed
its weight at 7-8 pounds. Of coarse I released it not knowing till later what
species it was. I didn't know such a fish existed in those small fresh
water
ponds.

A friend and I were fishing the upper Yakima between Elk Meadows and
Easton on a large private ranch to which we and our wives had been invited. We
fished upstream and around a right angle bend for about three hours. The
water we were wading in was waist high or even a little higher with an even
bottom. We were going up the middle of the river and fishing against both
banks. We both caught and released a goodly number of fish. We finally
decided we better get back to our wives whom we had basically deserted for the
afternoon. Not being familiar with this area, I made the mistake that
instead of retracing our steps, we just cut the corner and go through the
woods. Some four hours later, having traversed what I would say was
probably only about 1/3 of a mile, we stumbled out of the worst jungle I have
ever gone thru. We were bruised, cut up, and had welts over our hands, arms,
necks and faces from encounters with the devils club, trees,
branches, and bugs of all kinds. Never again. When we did get back, our
host said that we had gone through the middle of a bog where the elk in the
area hang out during hunting season. He said he had gone in their one time to
explore and had the same experience. I have never been in nastier terrain in
my life and I have been in some pretty raw places in the world. It was
the type of place where once you committed you had to keep going
forward as it was impossible to turn around. Cost each of us a pair of
waders, broken rods, and we were lucky to have not broken a leg. Still
have nightmares over that one. Message: stay out of elk bogs!

Subject: Fishing season 2003
Hello everyone:
I want to start new topic and ask
everyone, what was your worst expirience while fishing in past seasons.
I know everyone has a great story to tell some of them more embarrassing
and some of them not so.
I have one short one:
Two years ago I
was fishingfork of the Stilly for steelhead, and went on to fish
spot for the first time On the way back, I could not find the right
single track leading me to my car, quickly was getting dark. I had a
2 trails to chose from and went for the better looking one.
After
struggling for a good 1 hr so with out the light with in my full gear, I
walked right in to the tree head on, from far way I could see the house
light which was parked across the road from my house. What was
separating me from my car was maze of big blackberry bushes.
I
struggled for a long time, found the feeding creek and fallow it towards
what I tough was the road and my parked car.
I was getting close
to the sound of traffic , avery now and than I would hear the sound of
car driving by , good sound!
Well after I finally moved on my four
limps like a dog, it was a close call, my rod was just about to be run
over by a car , when I was making last final push out of the
ditch.
Man, I was cut up pretty bad that night, I actually was crying
like a baby from seeing the" Light " House light there is, later after I
put my senses together, I was thinking about my own stupidity that
night, why did I not bring the flash light!
Well I have to say I
was pretty scary dude that night foe one in my life.
Now when I drive
by this same spot, I look how short was the distance from the
river to my car, and I think how dumb we could be sometimes,in pitch
black with out the light 200yards is more like a mile away!
Small
packet flash light or better yet head unit make those long days on the
water for the Good ones!
Happy fishing everyone,
Les
