Is he fishing inshore and fishing reefs? I will assume so if he using a
kayak

For around the rocks use a white clouser size 4-2-1/0. I bring all kinds
and everytime I ask the pangero what to use they say "blanco". Cerise and
white, chartreuse and white work too of course. Bring as many olive and
white as you bring white.

Definitely need fast sinking shooting heads and teeny style lines. Double
down on your count. If the water looks twenty feet, count to 40 before
starting retrieve. If you don't hook up go up by 5. Initial retrieve
should be a quick burst long strip to get attention. Then a few shorties.
Repeat 4 or 5 times on a cast. Don't cast more than 45 to 50 feet. These
guys are going to be fought OFF the real with handstrips. You take the time
to get the fish on the reel, they're already in the rocks.

Sounds like your friend is on the cheap side :-) Brings lots of lines.
Rocks and reefs are harsh...

Phil

Subject: Fishing BAJA

Hello Everyone,

A good friend of mine is going on a sea kayak trip in baja in two weeks. HE
has failed to catch fish on his fly rod two years in a row.
He knows that the fish are there, because he sees them when snorkeling and
diving. He says that they are 20 or 30 feet deep. He plans to use an 8 wt.
rod with a multi tip system. I'm thinking that 1) he needs a high density
full sinking fly line, and 2) he needs better fly selection. I'm planning
to
tie the flies for him if I can.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks,

james
