Eric, By early October the flows in the Yakima should be low. The few rapid areas should not be a problem between Cle Elum and Thorp, however, life jackets are always a desired safety precaution, especially if kids are along. Be alert for a waste way flume entering the river a couple miles below the Teanaway River confluence. There is usually a danger sign posted. Tricky currents there have caused problems for floaters in the past. In a spot or two you might have to walk your canoe through shallow gravel bars. There are some brush piles and downed trees but they're easily avoided. Look for a small ripple dam (easily negotiated) just before you get to the Thorp Bridge and a much larger diversion dam just beyond Thorp (water craft should not float over the dam). The Yakima is a gorgeous place to be in the fall. Take your time and enjoy the autumn colors, and the wildlife. There are some nice trout in that section as well if you have time to wet a line.

I am planning to take a canoe trip with non-fishing friends on the Yak in early October. This is a leisure trip rather than a fishing trip, although I will be hoping to find some time to wet the line. We are thinking about Cle Elum to Thorpe, or, if that is too far, Teanaway to Thorpe. Does anyone have any information about what to expect in terms of flows and potential concerns at that time of year for a canoe on the Yak? Thanks in advance.
