Ian, in Southwestern Washington and Northwestern Oregon thoughts turn to steelhead in the winter. There are several fine steelhead streams that fish well with a fly....the Washoughal, Toutle in Washington and the Sandy on the Oregon side. There are also several coastal streams that run into the Columbia between Longview and the coast. I haven't fished them for years so can't really comment on them. I've always intended to give the East Fork of the Lewis a try on flies but just haven't gotten around to it....so much water and so little time.

For winter trout(and for steelhead right now), the Deschutes is the river. That's about a 2 1/2 hour trip for you but well worth the trip.

Good luck.

This is my first post here. I am relatively new to fly fishing and have only lived in Vancouver Washington for a few years. The last couple of days I have fished Siouxon Creek and Canyon Creek about 10 miles east of Chelatchie. I caught several rainbows between 8-10 inches on a Elk Hair Caddis. After October 1st, these rivers shut down to fishing. Could anyone recommend any creeks/rivers within 50 or so miles of Vancouver that are open to fishing through the winter months? How is the fly fishing around here in the winter? I know this is kinda directed to those familiar with this area, but any input would be nice.

Thanks,

Ian
