I hooked up with Juro Mukai (www.chathamangler.com) through the Flytalk site and hired him for the day. I awoke to howling winds and rain at 5AM on Wed. My wife told me I couldn't go. I called Juro, and we finally decided to meet for lunch in Chatham and decide then. He told me of some spots in the lee of the wind, and I made the critical decision: Of course I was going to fish!
The best part of the trip was using--exclusivley--CND two-handers, the Surf-tamer, and the lighter All-around. Juro is a patient and encouraging instructor. I caught on fairly quick. Casting off-shoulder. In the wind. Remarkably, it was easy. I started with the heavier rod, and when I tried the lighter one, it was like coming home. I hit 90-100' regularly. I told Juro that he's ruined me forever.
The rain quit, and the wind shifted from the NE to the NW. Tide was going out, and we were wading the flats near Nauset Beach. My casts were coming easier. I could clearly see the structure Juro was pointing out.
Just because I change entire coasts, it doesn't mean my luck changes.
Finally, after going back to the truck and fishing the beach at the Chatham Light, I caught two schoolies. Juro has photographic proof. What a blast.
Naturally, Thursday was gorgeous.
Juro is an excellent guide and all around nice guy. He specializes in estuary fishing for stripers, blues and false albicore. He knows the flats, the beaches, the channels and the tides. Call 'im up.
Oh! The fish were caught on a #2 or 1/0 Real Eel, about 6" long, sinking line, short, sharp erratic retrieve.
