Subject: Silver Creek Report

I just returned from a 4-day trip to Sun Valley. Actually my fishing partner Bill Denman and I flew to Boise on Saturday (6/4) and fished one of my favorite spots in eastern Oregon before heading to Sun Valley on Sunday. We had planned to head down to Twin Falls to fish the Salmon Creek Reservoir on Sunday evening but heard the rumor of hatching brown drakes and diverted directly to Silver Creek instead. The drakes were indeed there, but with the weather not clearing the 50 deg. threshold, these big mayflies could not get their wings going and at least one nights hatch was left to freeze to death in the grass on Monday and Tuesday.

The weather was not what you would hope for with the highs ranging from 39-43 deg. on three of the days we were there. The wind was gusting to over 20mph and there was even a dusting of snow amidst the hail flurries. Ironically the fishing was quite good. There were decent Beatis hatches with a smattering of PMDs and a few of the elusive brown drakes during our stay. We found ourselves casting to rising fish for hours where pods were literally boiling during the beatis hatches despite the terrible weather.

The fish in the creek are as abundant in numbers as I have ever seen and they are very healthy and strong fighters again. I didnt make my annual trek to the creek last year based on the pitiful conditions two years ago. There is still a New Zealand snail problem that they are trying to remedy with boot-washing stations at each of the entrances to the Preserve and whatever they have done over the past two years to help the population recover, it is working big time. Most of the fish I landed were in the 14-17 range, but all were extremely feisty and in beautiful condition. There were a few bigger fish hooked, but not landed.

If you were thinking of making a trip to the creek this year, I would encourage you to do so.

I posted a gallery of photos of our trip here:

Some of you may recognize the first handful of photos from my secret spot, but it shall remain nameless in this email J
