Title: Re: 2006 European fishing trip
It's a lot like trying to be prepared for ones own death.  You could take a hundred different precautions and still not be prepared.  In the mean time, you miss life.  What ever happens will happen anyway no matter what you do.  One day of fishing with my Sage in Europe would beat weeks of slashing the air with some Cortland combo from Wal-Mart.  While stationed overseas, I met lot of great people and built great memories fishing around Germany.  It's not like anything we know here in the states.  A very different culture the fisherman have over there.  Had I been worried about the little details, I would have missed the big picture.  Just have fun.

Ray,

It's preposterous that your frends should tell you to buy cheap gear to use on a fishing holiday in UK, France, Germany, Spain & Italy. Normal precautions need to be taken with your gear as would while traveling in the states. Hell, a case could be made that your gear stands a better chance of being stolen here rather than there. As far as losing your gear, well, 'nuff said.

Leland.

I want to take a Sage SP 5wt & Orvis 2wt but friends tell me they will probably get lost or stolen and to buy a cheap 5wt to take on the trip instead  but they have never travel much in a foreign country, so I am not sure how good their advice is even though they are looking out for my well being.  Can anyone out there comment on this or make some suggestions regarding this and what type of gear & flies to drag along?

Looking forward to the replies and I WILL be asking more questions in the future as I have never fished out side of the U.S. [mainly the  PNW] and British Columbia.

Thanks,
Ray
