Summer 2005
Volume 5, Number 4
Low Flow and/or High Temperature Waters :(
In general, depending on species, once temperatures rise above the mid-60s
F., trout can start feeling the adverse effects of high temperatures.
Feeding will be reduced.
Sustained swimming becomes more laborious.
The ability to compete with other species for common food sources is reduced
once temperatures approach the 70s.
Higher temperatures can affect equilibrium.
Lethal temperatures, depending on species, range from 74 F to 79 F. However,
it's possible for trout to survive at these temperatures if they locate cool
thermal refuges, or if these high temperatures are moderated by drops in
temperature at night.
There are no hard and fast criteria that definitely determine when it's okay
to fish and when it's not. But anglers should be extra-cautious handling
trout when water temperatures reach the mid 60s. It's wise to
consider avoiding
waters where temperatures reach 70 F. or more each day during a sustained
period. Watch fish behavior after you release them. If they're
sluggish or seem
slower to recover than usual, they could be stressed from the
effects of high
temperatures.

Diamond D Ranch
The Diamond D Ranch has become our home away from home. As mid summer
approaches Loon Creek has been fishing very well, although the stone
flies are
over, big attractor dry flies seem to fit the bill.
There are some really nice bull trout in this stream as well as on the
private lake on the ranch. Much to our amazement occasionally the
bull trout will
chase the small rainbows we catch.
In addition to lodging at the ranch we are offering 3-4 day pack trips six
to twelve miles down Loon Creek for the wilderness fly fishing
experience of a
lifetime.
The Cutthroat fishing this far in is phenomenal!!!

Remember...Teach a child to fish & change his life forever!!!
Grande Ronde Steelhead Clinic & BBQ
Fall and Winter were very good to us here at Dreams on the Fly...Our first
annual Steelhead Clinic & BBQ was a huge success, so much so we have people
booking for the upcoming clinic on September 24th, 2005. Our guests
received 5
hours of steelhead fly fishing instruction, knots and leaders, fly line
types, and so much more. We spent 3 hours in the water, actually
practicing what
we taught. Then we disbursed, with some heading home and others like Terry
(below) fishing and using the techniques we taught. The cost of the
clinic is
$50.00 and includes all you can eat riverside BBQ.
_Web Specials_ (http://www.dreamsonthefly.com/webspecials.html)
In addition to the 2nd Annual Steelhead Clinic and BBQ, we are offering a
2-day intensive Spey Rod Steelhead Fishing Clinic. This will consist of our
2 day Spey Class and will be held September 10th & 11th, 2005 on the Grande
Ronde River. This two day class will be held on the water. Our goal
is to put

how to fish these water types with an emphasis on casting, presentation and
line control. We will instruct and introduce you to the Snap-T, Roll cast,
Double Spey, Single Spey and the Perry Poke. These basic spey casts
will give you
the fundamentals to catch fish on any steelhead river. We will cover
different types of lines, rods, reels, and terminal tackle. Keep in
