Someone has emailed me an image of a document, but the way it has been sent
is as an embedded image in a Word document. File size of the Word document
is about 1.6Mb.

I can open the Word document (using Word for Mac 2004 on OSX 10.4.9), and
click on the image. I can use the zoom function in Word to enlarge the
image, and the words within the enlarged image remain quite clear.

I want to retain the image as a standalone image file, not an image within a
Word document. I can Control+click the image and select Save As Picture. The
formatting options are GIF, JPG, PICT, PNG & BMP.

If I save as any of GIF, JPG, PNG or BMP, I end up with a file, but the
quality of the image is significantly reduced, so much so that the text is
very distorted. The resulting file sizes vary GIF = 48Kb, JPG = 68Kb, PNG
= 208Kb, BMP = 840Kb. Despite the varying file sizes, there doesn¹t seem to
be much difference in the resulting poor quality and resolution of the
image.

However, if I save as a PICT file, the image quality appears to be retained,
BUT...I end up with 8.2Mb file size, and instead of just a single image,
when I open the file two separate copies of the image - one at the top
towards the left and one at the bottom towards the right. If I open this
PICT file in Preview, I can then crop one of the copies of the image using
Preview¹s Crop function, then save as a JPG. The resulting JPG is about 1Mb,
and DOES seem to retain much of the original image quality.

So, I seem to have found a workaround, but can anyone tell me why, when I
save the embedded image in the Word document as an image format other than
PICT (ie. save directly from the Word application), why the resolution goes
out the window? Also, why when I save as a PICT do I end up with two copies
of the images within the same file?

Cheers, Steven
