What type of CDR (brand) are you using?
Did this brand work successfully with the music CD burning?
After you insert the CD, the machine is *meant* to simply 'mount' the
disc on the desktop (like mounting a server or a zip disk). Although,
this mounting is actually just a "pretend" mount, since all data is
kept on your hard drive until the CD burn is actually executed at
your request.
If the disc isn't mounting...
Have you tried doing a 'software update' (Software Update control
panel), to see if your machine can update to the latest Authoring
drivers? (You might have to update your Software Update control panel
first).
Also, as you appear to be at UWA, you can download many of the
drivers from Uniserver. (Well, people outside UWA can too, but since
your machine may be on campus, it will download very quickly).
To connect via Netscape or IE, you can go to:

To connect via the Chooser, select Apple Share, and connect via the IP address:

From there, select your updates (as a guest), and you're off!
The OS 9.2.1 update, for example, is available there.

Hi there
We have a recent model iMac (OS 9.1) with built-in CD recorder. I've
used it to burn music CDs, so know it works OK. The Disc Burner
software and extension are installed.
The problem arises when trying to burn files. Faithfully following
Mac Help-Centre, I insert blank CD-R, the drive whirrs into action,
but the CD does not register. Alternatively, opening Disc Burner
software yields a window asking me to insert blank media. Upon doing
so, nothing happens after the CD drive fires up. No suggestion of a
dialogue box or anywhere to drag files/folders as help centre
suggests.
Am I missing something really obvious (please forgive me), or is
there another issue at play?
