Hi John and WAMUG folks.
You should always be wary of upgrading from one OS to another, on any computer.
Your data, applications, and system files are all stored on volatile
storage space; the hard drive. So, all upgrades are to a degree, are
risky. Backups should be an essential part of your routine.
Having said that, updates such as the one mentioned below, are
designed to optimise various things, update device drivers, make
things run more smoothly and things like that. Mac OS 9.2.1 also
helps for a smoother transition to Mac OS X, for those that choose to
follow that path in the near future.
In your case, the updates would include some of the authoring
updates, which in my experience fix the 'lack of mounting' problem
that your CD burner was exhibiting. Of course, these small updates
(e.g. the authoring update) can be downloaded separately, without
installing the whole OS upgrade.

Since you mention it ... I've not been able to find out readily (e.g.
www.apple.com wants one to log in to Applecare to access info
regarding 9.2 and versiontracker's blurb is next to useless and
product info directs one back to apple.com!) what reasons I would
have for upgrading to 9.2. What does it offer or fix that I should
go through the worry of upgrading the OS from 9.1?
