I haven't been following the thread so excuse me if this has already
been suggested.
I have had similar problems on a variaty of machines. Deleting
preferences fixed the problem. monitors, date and time and all the
system preferences.
The Monitors pref fixed the problem when it occurred with FileMaker. I
haven't seen anything similar since 9.1
