Hi all, I have been asked by a few people to explain why Apple thinks Quartz is so cool and why it is so slow on older machines. There are also a few people who think Apple is trying to rip them off by only allowing Quartz Extreme to run on higher end graphics cards with AGP.
Well, I have found a photo from WWDC which pretty much explains why Apple is so pumped about Quartz. <http://macfannet.mycom.co.jp/special/special/images/wwdc2002/120.jpg> In this photo, there is a window playing a movie. Probably a DVD. The floating objects are standard OpenGL teapot models. Used basically for testing. They have a silver texture. They are _REFLECTING THE MOVIE in REAL TIME!_ So you have objects in one application reflecting the image of a DVD being played back in another. THAT is pretty freakin' incredible. To put it in the words of someone on another list... HOLY S__T! This puts EVERYTHING currently available on any other platform look like it was made in 1975.
