This is the second report of this I've seen in the past few days, so
it may pay to take heed and ensure your devices are both plugged in
before connecting the FireWire cable.

Mac's FireWire ports (an expensive problem):
I am writing this as a warning to other Macintosh users. I recently
purchased, directly from Formac, their CDRW 32 x 10 x 40. The drive
burned out the Firewire ports on my Dual 500 G4 Mac. The repair will
cost about $500 for a new motherboard. Formac acknowledges that
their drive caused the problem but says the problem is the the way
Apple implemented its FireWire card. They assured me that Apple
would repair my machine for free. No Apple phone rep has heard of
this program and the local Apple repair shop is equally in the dark.
Formac than repeatedly assured me that they would have Apple call
me. That also never happened. I have listed our email exchanges
below. They were supplemented by several phone conversations.
