For this combination I think you need the Japanese Language Kit, at least, this was my experience after trying to get it to work without it, although I could be wrong. After this, sys 9.x, Japanese support was with the system, although you had to load it as an option during the install. We are using that system (8.6) on a 7300 at Tsunami and, of course, we need Japanese.
