Perhaps i spoke too soon, the system is now booting up fine, and working great for about 5 minutes then locking up completely, about to try it from a bootable cd to see if the same thing happens, any suggestions otherwise?! Nothing is open as such and the machine works fine until the mouse stops moving and the keyboard stops responding!
Have you unplugged any USB devices? Run Disk First Aid? Checked the console logs? Made sure there's enough hard drive space available? Removed any filesharing auto-mounts or other network connection type things?
