Does anyone have any idea about this "Other.." user and the
'privilege separation'(including the fact that privileges were
changed in my drives)? Is it just a glitch or is it possible that I
have (had) a visitor? What can I do to stop this happening again? I
have had the 'blue screens' about four times since I bought the
system - and although it doesn't scare me witless anymore, it is
annoying.

AFAIK, the 'Other...' icon appears if the system thinks you've got a
user without any icon associated with it. Clicking on 'Other' will
take you to a normal login prompt. It's not actually a user itself,
hence why you can't find it.
It's probably just a sign that one of your preferences files has got
corrupted, I recently had a similar thing happen.
Paranoia is a wonderful thing.
