Subject: CDMA to Mac Phone

Dear WAMUGers
Please can you help? I'm getting a bit confused.

We're doing the family caravan trip around Oz in our long service leave
starting in July.

I have decided we need a CDMA phone with the following features:
I. Must connect to an external car mounted aerial
2. Must connect to my Mac to enable dialling my ISP to check email and bank
balances. (I think the word is "data" capable)

I have gone to a number of Telstra dealers. Most can only show me about 5
CDMA phones and most say the ONLY CDMA phone that will connect to an
external Aerial AND do Data is the Nokia 6385.

Although every third dealer says "don't get the Nokia CDMA phone, we have
problems with them"

Please can anyone recommend a CDMA phone with the 2 capabilities I
mentioned?

Can anyone recommend a phone dealer/shop worth talking to?

Many thanks
Rod Blitvich

Rod,

Here's my experience. I have a Kyocera 2135. About 1 year old. I have occasion to use it in a dead spot in the hills so I bought an external antenna plus patch cable.

Now I don't think (?) the 2135 does the second part of your requirements, but here's the problem anyway. Kyocera do make an "in car" kit, but all the Telstra shop ( Galleria/Osborne Park) people I talked to say they will not recommend its use. There is no Kyocera part that is simply a patch cable and antenna, so I got a non-Kyocera part. Then after sixmonths of using the aerial, the phone dies - no signal worth a cracker anywhere. Numerous calls to 125111 ( that's an entertainment in itself) to get advice.

Off to Telstra Service in Osborne Park, $50 later (non-warranty repair) and a warning from the Telstra shop in Scarborough Beach Rd : "we do not sell any non-standard plug in aerials or patch cabling". Kyocera do sell an "in-car" unit but I got the feeling they didn't like it. Seems the socket on the 2135 phone is weak , and so too I suspect are all the others - same fitting. Nothing against the good old Kyoto Ceramic Co, but I'd look at the Nokia again. Maybe there's some Consumers Assoc data? How about Ericsson?
