One of the most common problems I see as a Mac trouble-shooter is people
with too many or damaged or incomplete fonts in their system folder. Do
yourself a really big favour and get a copy of ATM deluxe or Extensis
Suitcase, keep your fonts in a separate folder on the hard drive and use one
of these utilities to manage them. You can organise them in sets and they
can be loaded and unloaded dynamically without the need for a restart.

Ideally you should have just the system fonts in the system folder and
everything else in your master fonts folder. Fonts that you add via ATM
deluxe will be verified as complete and undamaged before you can activate
them.

Read as much of this as you can:

There are links to the utilities I've mentioned as well as lots of others.

Hope that's helpful
Rob
