St George latest fake site target AUGUST 21, 2003 ST GEORGE Bank said police were investigating a hoax website that asked the bank's customers to submit confidential information over the internet.
The website, which St George said was run by "fraudulent operators", was the latest in a string of fake sites to imitate the actual websites of big Australian banks. "From this morning, both customers and non-customers of St George began reporting they had received emails asking them to enter their internet banking details and passwords as the bank was updating its security systems," St George said. "The emails did not originate from St George. The fake website was quickly shut down and Federal Police are investigating." St George, based in NSW and Australia's fifth biggest bank by market value, said it posted a warning about phoney websites earlier this year when other banks were targeted. ADVERTISEMENT The bank said customers should delete any emails that appeared to be from St George and asked for personal information. Customers who believed their details may have been compromised should immediately change their internet banking password, the bank said.
