>Does a .PIF file have any useful purpose?

.pif = Program Identification File
used by windows - kind of like a short cut on steroids.
not used by Mac OS - but often maac OS identifies them incorrectly as other types of files.

I'm not sure exactly how XP/2000 uses them but in older versions of Win they link an executable to an custom icon and a text string so you could create several.PDF's for a single FTP program so that each one had a different text string that would have the FTP server name and user ID , also a custom icon to help you identify which one's which and a different name
So: three different icons on your desktop:
FTP library, FTP Accounts & FTP Web
all point to the same executable but feed it different text string that the command uses as its perimeters.
