Subject: IInet and the fridge...

Far be it from me to rush to the aid of IInet in any way but the fridge
analogy could be closer to the mark than at first suspected :-)

The helpdesk guy could have been referring to Earth Leakage which can do
strange things to your phone line and your power supply. We recently had
a client that had very similar problems, we went through with her to
make sure all of our ports & systems were working fine and went through
her system with a fine tooth comb to no avail. The problem now seems to
be fixed!!!

Solution: Fixing the water pump that was shorting out to earth :-)

Since then she has been fine with our service. The reference to the
Fridge could be closer to the mark if the fridge is of an older model
where earth leakage can occur :-) Not to say of course we should all
check our fridges before calling IInets helpline :-)

Certainly worth considering at least as a possible cause of your
problems.
Western Power & Telstra can check the services they provide for Earth
Leakage (normally free) and I have found the problems usually occur at
this time of year due to extra lightning strikes in winter degrading
lines and power cables.

Hope that clarifies things a little for you.
