Normally I'd just tell them to write it off but the user is obviously quite sentimentally attached to their monitor so....

B&W 17 " monitor - when turned on at the front switch a loud crackling noise (much like an electric insect zapper) and quite a display of electric sparks arcing across the upper grill then the monitor shuts it's self off. The first thing I did was to look up at the ceiling to see if there had been a leak or something but couldn't see any thing not does the monitor it's self show evidence of slippage or other foreign matter having entered the inner workings.

Any ideas or suggestions including ball park $$ damage from taking it to somewhere like Diamond Video & Visual?

...still think it should be written off, never liked taking risks with high voltage devices.
