Yes, Apple did bury thousands of Lisa's as a tax write-off. If they'd given them away it would have cost Apple more money than burying them and getting the tax benefit.

And no, people didn't laugh at them, they lusted after them - but they cost $10,000 a pop so Apple didn't sell as many as they hoped hence the burial - it was only when the Mac 128k came out that they could get a subset of what the Lisa could do on a tiny screen and only with the release of the Mac II that a lot of other Lisa technologies like the big screen, the power-on button on the keyboard etc became more widely available.

probably because they were like the P76 everyone laughed at them when they
first came out but now their worth their weight in gold
