I've been surprised at the lack of "Panther" traffic on this list. Other
lists I inhabit have been agog with talk of it. Personally I think it's the
best upgrade from Apple for ages. It's the first time since X came out that
it actually feels like a finished OS rather than some half baked thing that
Apple shoved out the door to keep people interested.
I did an upgrade install over a very messy jaguar that was full of drivers
and extensions from third party apps just to see if it could handle it. I
was going to format the drive but couldn't be bothered backing it up and
thought if it's a disaster I'll erase it and start again but it all worked
flawlessly and my Mac (G4-450, 640MB RAM) feels way faster and more
responsive in all apps not just the finder, which by the way is a million
times better than the Jag finder but still not as good as classic Mac OS
(IMHO).

My Epson- SC580 works straight out of the box with the optional CUPS drivers
installed (no configuration required at all) which was worth the price of
admission alone just to actually see that work! ;)

I have a MOTU-828 firewire 8 Channel Audio A->D box and with the MOTU
Panther firewire drivers I can route all core audio through it which is a
miracle. No switching amp inputs every time I switch from Digital Performer
or Reason to iTunes or anything that requires system audio.

Apart from all the fanfare of fast user switching and Expose I think the
control panels, networking and everything else if better integrated and
overall it just feels "finished" or at lest a good part of the way there. A
lot of the transparency and "bells and whistles" stuff has gone or at lest
been toned down in favour of a more responsive interface which is great!
Cheers
Rob
